Mustapha Ussif, the Youth and Sports Minister, has provided confirmation regarding the total expenditure of $195 million on infrastructure development in preparation for the 2023 African Games.
Set to occur from March 8 to March 23, the Games will predominantly unfold at the Borteyman Sports Complex and University of Ghana Stadium, supplemented by support from 15 additional venues.
During a press briefing on Monday, March 4, 2024, Minister Ussif unveiled the detailed breakdown of the infrastructure expenditure.
“The funding of the projects, relating to the provision of facilities for the hosting and organisation of the Games, was good as all the contractors have been paid,” he said.
“The total contract sum for the provision of facilities for the Games, approved by this August House, amounted to $195,255,153.74.”
Significantly, $145 million was allocated to the construction of a cutting-edge sports centre at Borteyman, with $34 million directed towards the renovation of the University of Ghana Stadium, and $16 million earmarked for the refurbishment of the Games Village.
Minister Ussif reiterated the government’s unwavering commitment to the advancement of national athletes by expressing the intent to transform the Borteyman Sports Complex into a sports university.
According to him, this strategic initiative aligns with the overarching objective of nurturing and fostering the growth of the talents of Ghana’s burgeoning sports stars.
