President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has commissioned the Flowerpot Interchange in Accra, a infrastructure project seeking to reduce traffic congestion and enhancing connectivity within the city.
Speaking at the commissioning on November 19, 2024, the President described the project as a game-changer for commuters traveling between Spintex Road and East Legon.
The 800-meter flyover, which begins at the Palace Mall and ends at Boundary Road, complements a newly completed underpass, providing an alternative route for North-South movement along the Tema Motorway.
During his address, President Akufo-Addo revealed that 14 additional interchanges are currently under construction across the country as part of efforts to improve Ghana’s road network.
In the Greater Accra Region, these include ongoing works at the Obetsebi Lamptey Interchange Phase Two, Nungua, Adjiringanor, Prampram, Dawhenya, and the Tema Motorway Phase Two.
The President also highlighted progress in other regions, mentioning the Suame Interchange Phase One in the Ashanti Region, the Nyakrom Magazine New Road Interchange, and another project in the Western Region.
The greater Accra Regional Minister, Titus Glover speaking at the event said this flower pot fly over will strengthen the commercial and social dynamics within Greater Accra and opening now growth for economic development.
Upon commissioning, the project will enhance the lives of commuters traveling between the North and South sections of the Accra-Tema Motorway.
It will also alleviate congestion at the Flowerpot intersection along Spintex Road and provide a direct route between Accra East (Burma Camp and its surrounding areas) and East Legon, and vice versa.
The project features an 802-meter dual carriageway for the viaduct with asphaltic concrete surfacing, a 140-meter ramp constructed from Shiashie onto the viaduct towards Airport Hills, and an 80-meter ramp from the viaduct onto the Motorway towards Tema.
This project was funded by Afrexim Bank and the Government of Ghana, contract duration was 93 months.
