The Minister of the Interior, Henry Quartey, has directed the immediate closure of all land borders.
This temporary directive, announced in a statement on Friday, December 6, will remain in effect until 6:00 pm on Sunday, December 8, 2024.
The Ministry called on citizens and travelers to cooperate with State Security Agencies enforcing the closure during the election period.
The decision comes as Ghanaians prepare to elect a new President and 275 Members of Parliament on today, December 7.
To further bolster security, the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has begun deploying personnel to strategic locations to support the Ghana Police Service (GPS) in maintaining law and order during the electoral process.
This development was detailed in a press release dated December 7, signed by the Director-General of Public Relations of the GAF, Brigadier General E. Aggrey-Quashie.
In the release, the GAF clarified its role during the elections, assuring the public that military personnel would not be stationed at polling stations but would serve as standby support, intervening only upon the request of the police.
“The Ghana Armed Forces wishes to inform the public that the deployment of its personnel to designated locations in support of the Ghana Police Service for the peaceful conduct of the elections is ongoing. The military will only be deployed upon request by the GPS,” Brigadier General Aggrey-Quashie explained.
The GAF also emphasized its commitment to maintaining peace and stability throughout the elections, urging citizens to exercise their civic rights responsibly.
“GAF reiterates its commitment to safeguarding the stability and sovereignty of the nation whilst protecting the integrity of the electoral process,” the statement concluded.
Citizens were encouraged to cooperate with security personnel and refrain from actions that could jeopardize the peace of the elections.
