The National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) has reported a tragic toll of 27 lives lost and 42 people injured in road accidents over the past two weeks.
These incidents occurred across multiple regions including Central, Eastern, Ashanti, Volta, North-East, and Oti, highlighting the widespread nature of the problem.
Despite ongoing road safety campaigns, the NRSA expressed deep concern over the alarming frequency of accidents, calling the situation “worrying.”
In a press release, the Authority noted, “While road traffic crashes and casualties have significantly decreased over the past three years, the recent incidents remain unacceptable and have serious socio-economic impacts on the affected families and the nation as a whole.”
Abraham Amaliba, the Acting Director-General of NRSA, emphasized the role of public service vehicles in the accidents, stressing that such vehicles must adhere to higher safety standards.
He also outlined the major causes of these crashes, including speeding, the use of mobile phones while driving, and general road discipline issues such as wrongful overtaking.
The NRSA has called for greater collaboration from all stakeholders and urged motorists to strictly observe speed limits to prevent further casualties.
