Three people have been confirmed dead and several others are feared trapped after a mining pit collapsed at Akyem Wenchi in the Denkyembour District of the Eastern Region.
The tragic incident, which occurred on July 16, 2025, has sent shockwaves through the local community, as rescue teams continue to battle resistance from miners and youth at the site.


Chairman of the District Security Council and District Chief Executive, Umar Ahmed, confirmed the incident and expressed concern over the mounting challenges facing rescue efforts.
“It is an unfortunate and difficult situation we are dealing with. Rescue efforts were ongoing, but we were met with resistance from the miners and youth who had massed up around the pit. We definitely need more personnel from the military to assist in the rescue operation,” he told the media.
