A total of 37,000 applicants are sitting for the Teacher Licensure Examination today, Friday, July 18, 2025, across the country. Out of this number, 5,000 are re-sitters while the remaining majority are first-time applicants.
The examination, which is scheduled to last two hours, is being conducted in various centres including the Accra High School, where 600 candidates—both freshers and re-sitters—are participating.
Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu visited the Accra High School centre to monitor proceedings and is expected to continue his tour to other examination centres.
Addressing the media earlier on July 15, Mr Iddrisu reiterated that the ongoing examination would mark the final phase of the current licensure system.
“If there is a last opportunity for those who sat and couldn’t make it, that process should not travel beyond 30th August,” he stressed.
The Minister further announced that the teacher licensure regime would be replaced with a new assessment model focused on practical skills and classroom competence.
“This new model will guide the teacher licensure exam beyond solely paper-based assessments,” he explained, noting that supervised practicum evaluations and structured mentorship will now form a core part of the qualification process.
The changes, he said, are designed to ensure that certified teachers are not only academically prepared but also practically ready for the classroom.
