A total of 72 people collapsed, including students, service personnel, and soldiers, during the 67th Independence Parade at the Tamale Jubilee Park on Wednesday, March 6. They suffered from severe dehydration due to the harsh weather conditions characterized by the scorching sun. Standing in the sun for hours likely contributed to their collapse.
Yakubu Amin Abukari, the northern regional boss of the Ghana Red Cross Society, reported that all 72 people have since been resuscitated. The paramedic staff tasked with rendering first aid at the regional Independence Day parade worked to attend to those who collapsed.
The parade was attended by dignitaries, including the northern regional minister, Shani Alhassan Shaibu, and the mayor of Tamale, Sule Salifu.
