President-elect John Dramani Mahama has described his victory in the 2024 presidential election as a victory for the people of Ghana, emphasizing the transparency and fairness of the electoral process.
Speaking at his office on Monday evening after being officially declared the winner, Mahama stated, “I accept this mandate as your next President.” He pledged to work tirelessly to reset the nation, acknowledging the significant challenges ahead.
“Ghana is for all of us. It is not enough to be born and die here, but to live with satisfaction,” Mahama remarked.
He further criticized the outgoing administration for its governance, saying, “The journey is not going to be easy because this government has messed the system. However, we shall win the battle of resetting Ghana.”
Mahama also praised his running mate, Vice President-elect Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, calling her an inspiration and a trailblazer.
“Because of you, Ghana can celebrate having a woman as Vice President,” he said, highlighting her historic role.
The Electoral Commission (EC) declared Mahama the winner with 6,328,397 votes, representing 56.55% of the valid ballots cast, while his main opponent, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), secured 4,657,304 votes (41.61%).
This decisive victory marks Mahama’s return to the presidency and strengthens the National Democratic Congress (NDC), which won a majority in Parliament with over 160 confirmed seats.
International observers have commended the EC for ensuring a transparent and credible electoral process, solidifying the legitimacy of Mahama’s mandate as he prepares to be sworn in on January 7, 2025.
