President John Dramani Mahama has officially sworn in the members of the Constitutional Review Committee, charging them with the critical task of ensuring that Ghana’s Constitution remains dynamic and responsive to the evolving needs of its citizens.

The swearing-in ceremony took place at the Jubilee House in Accra on Thursday, January 30, 2025, with President Mahama offering a strong message of commitment to the nation’s democratic growth.

“Your work will not be in vain, this will not be an exercise in futility,” Mahama said to the committee members. “This exercise is not about any political party, it is about Ghana,” he emphasized, reinforcing that the review process would be impartial and focused on strengthening national governance.

The committee, which has a six-month mandate to complete its work, is chaired by Professor H Kwasi Prempeh, Executive Director of the Ghana Center for Democratic Development (CDD-Ghana). The team comprises legal scholars, political scientists, and civil society leaders with expertise in governance, all tasked with identifying gaps and challenges in the implementation of previous constitutional reforms.

The committee’s objectives include gathering diverse perspectives from various stakeholders and formulating actionable recommendations aimed at improving Ghana’s democratic institutions. “This review is crucial to ensuring that our Constitution remains a living document, responsive to the evolving needs and aspirations of our people,” Mahama noted.

The members of the committee are as follows:

  1. Prof. H Kwasi Prempeh – Chairman
  2. Justice Sophia Adinyirah – Member
  3. Prof. Kwame Karikari – Member
  4. Mrs. Charlotte Osei – Member
  5. Dr. Godwin Djokoto – Member
  6. Ibrahim Tanko Amidu – Member
  7. Dr. Esi Ansah – Member
  8. Dr. Rainer Akumperigeya – Secretary

Mahama expressed confidence that the committee would meet its deadline and deliver comprehensive recommendations that would help strengthen Ghana’s democratic processes. “I believe in your expertise and your commitment to good governance,” he said, adding that the work ahead would play a crucial role in shaping the future of the nation.
