The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has officially referred former Member of Parliament for Dome Kwabenya, Hon. Sarah Adwoa Safo, to its National Disciplinary Committee. According to a statement from the party’s General Secretary, this action is due to her recent media comments, which are said to be creating disaffection within the party.

This move comes in the wake of a series of interviews in which Adwoa Safo disclosed shocking details about her treatment within the party. Her revelations have sparked widespread debate, further deepening the already apparent tensions between her and the NPP leadership.

Background to the Move

Speaking during one of her interviews, Adwoa Safo explained the reasons for her prolonged absence from Parliament, which had led to widespread criticism. She revealed that her son was critically ill, and as a mother, she had to prioritize his well-being over her parliamentary duties.

“My son was at the verge of death, and I needed to be there as a mother. I wasn’t there as some made it look like,” she explained.

During her absence, she was heavily criticized, with many accusing her of neglecting her duties as an MP and abandoning her constituency. She further alleged that she was defamed by members of her own party.

“I have been defamed by my own party,” she stressed.

Determined to clear her name, Adwoa Safo insisted that she owed it to herself and Ghanaians to share her side of the story.

“I owe it to myself to let Ghanaians know my side of the story,” she said, claiming that many people had been misled about the true circumstances surrounding her absence.

One of the major controversies surrounding her tenure was the claim that she had voted for Alban Bagbin as Speaker of Parliament, a claim she strongly refuted. She also made it clear that she did not support the controversial E-Levy bill.

“I Did Not Vote for E-Levy, and I Do Not Regret It,” she boldly stated.

Her absence from Parliament during the crucial E-Levy vote significantly affected the party’s ability to pass the bill smoothly, which further strained her relationship with the NPP leadership.

Exit from Dome Kwabenya Politics

As reactions pour in from different factions of the party and the general public, Adwoa Safo has made a definitive declaration about her political future.

“I will never contest as MP for Dome Kwabenya again,” she stated emphatically.

Tensions with the Oquaye Family

Another major revelation from her interviews was her strained relationship with the influential Oquaye family. She alleged that former Speaker of Parliament, Professor Aaron Mike Oquaye, and his son, Mike Oquaye Jr., had made her political life difficult.

“Prof. Mike Oquaye and his son have not given me peace in Dome Kwabenya,” she revealed.

This statement has shocked many, as she has rarely spoken publicly against individuals within and outside NPP.

A Series of Explosive Interviews

Throughout the week, Adwoa Safo has been granting back-to-back interviews across multiple media platforms, shedding light on the internal challenges she faced within the NPP. In one of these interviews, she recounted how she was removed as Deputy Majority Leader and pushed to the backbenches, an action she described as humiliating.

“Look, it got to a time, in Parliament, we have a certain rule and practice—it has become more like a custom. Someone who has served as a deputy leader before is usually seated right behind the leaders. You can take notice of where Haruna and Muntaka sit. But when I was removed, I was made to sit at the backbench like a newcomer in Parliament.”

She further disclosed that it took the intervention of the party’s General Secretary and the Majority Whip to restore her to a more prominent seat in Parliament.

Adwoa Safo’s revelations highlight deep-seated issues within the NPP, exposing the internal struggles and factionalism that continue to shape the party’s dynamics. With her referral to the disciplinary committee, the political future of the former Dome Kwabenya MP remains uncertain, but one thing is clear—she is not backing down from telling her story.
