A tragic fire outbreak near the Madina Redco Flats in Accra has left widespread devastation in its wake, destroying over 150 structures and claiming the life of a young Nigerian woman, according to an official update from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS).
The incident occurred late Thursday night, April 18, at approximately 11:15 p.m., when a fierce blaze engulfed a cluster of wooden and metal structures used for both commercial and residential purposes. Firefighters from the Madina Fire Station responded promptly at 11:17 p.m., supported by teams from Adenta, Legon, Abelemkpe, and the GNFS Headquarters.
“A devastating fire broke out near the Madina Redco flats at 11:15 p.m. last night, involving 140 multiple wooden and 20 metal structures used for both commercial and residential purposes,” said Divisional Officer Two (DO II) Desmond Ackah, Head of Public Relations at the GNFS Headquarters. “Firefighters arrived at 11:17 p.m. with support from other stations.”
He explained that the fire was already fully developed when crews arrived on scene. “At 12:02 a.m., this morning, the fire was confined and fully contained at 2:22 a.m. Over 150 structures and their contents were totally destroyed,” he added.
Tragically, the fire claimed the life of a young Nigerian woman known only as Beauty, who is believed to have been in her early twenties. “Sadly, a Nigerian young lady named Beauty who is believed to be in her early twenties got trapped in the fire and lost her life,” Mr. Ackah confirmed. “Her charred body has been handed over to the Madina Police for preservation and further investigation.”
Despite the extensive damage, the fire service managed to prevent further disaster. “The adept firefighters managed to save over 200 nearby structures including the Redco flats,” Mr. Ackah noted.
The cause of the fire is yet to be determined and is currently under investigation by the appropriate authorities.
