The Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Mr. Sam Nartey George, has assured Ghanaians that data prices will begin to drop by the end of 2025.
Addressing the public during the World Telecommunications and Information Society Day event on Monday, May 19, the Minister responded to growing frustration over high internet costs, particularly expressed on social media platforms like X (formerly Twitter).
“My promise was that by the end of this year, we will see prices drop—and my promise remains. Just trust the process,” he affirmed.
Mr. George, who has faced mounting criticism online, acknowledged the public’s frustration but insisted that the solution required a structured, long-term strategy.
“I’ve been trending over the weekend on X because people think data costs must be cheaper by just the stroke of my pen,” he said, cautioning against unrealistic expectations for overnight fixes.
He revealed that a special committee he commissioned to chart a path forward had already completed its work ahead of schedule. “In 13 days, they delivered that roadmap,” he noted, adding that its implementation is already underway.
Explaining the root causes of the high costs, the Minister pointed to systemic issues in the telecommunications market.
“We’re dealing with eight years of distortion of the market. I wish I could fix it arbitrarily, but it takes a carefully calculated effort,” he explained.
Mr. George urged the public to remain patient as reforms take shape, assuring them that relief is on the way and the government remains committed to making data more affordable for all Ghanaians.
