The National Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Henry Nana Boakye, popularly known as Nana B, has described the continued detention of Ashanti Regional Chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako (Chairman Wontumi) as a blatant abuse of state power.
Speaking to the media during a protest march to the offices of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) on Thursday, May 29, Nana B criticised what he called a politically motivated strategy to frustrate Wontumi’s release.
“It is a clear abuse of power,” he said.
“We demand that there should be fairness in all of this. We are a nation of rule and law. President Mahama, what is happening?” he questioned, challenging the integrity of the state’s conduct in the matter.
The protest—led by Minority Leader Hon. Alexander Afenyo-Markin and joined by other NPP MPs—was triggered by what they described as draconian bail conditions imposed on Wontumi, who remains in EOCO custody after failing to meet a GHS50 million bail requirement.
Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, Ranking Member of Parliament’s Economy and Development Committee, stated bluntly, “What is going on is not law, it is politics.”
He emphasised that Wontumi had cooperated fully with the CID and questioned the need for such harsh measures.
“This is not acceptable,” he said. The Minority Caucus accused EOCO of undermining due process and warned that the current trajectory could erode public confidence in democratic institutions.
“This is an affront to our democracy,” one MP said, as calls for bipartisan accountability continue to intensify.
