Rockson Konde, Executive Director of the Centre for Conflict Resolution (CENCOR), has delivered a scathing critique of Electoral Commission Chairperson Jean Mensa, claiming that her tenure has failed to deliver a single successful election in Ghana.
Speaking in support of NDC Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketia’s recent call for the dismissal of the EC’s top leadership, Konde said Ghana’s electoral body has suffered a credibility crisis under Mensa’s stewardship and cannot be trusted to lead future polls.
In an exclusive interview with ABC News Gh on Thursday, June 25, Konde declared: “There has never been any successful election conducted without any problems under this leadership.”
He noted that the situation in the 2020 elections nearly spiraled into unrest, adding, “But for the restraint of the NDC leadership, Ghana would have gone in flames.”
According to him, the EC has failed in its constitutional mandate and has become the epicentre of political suspicion and national anxiety.
He highlighted the unresolved issues surrounding the Ablekuma North parliamentary results and other contentious electoral outcomes as indicators of a broken system.
Konde also pointed out that the public’s growing lack of trust in the EC is compounded by its failure to ensure transparency and timely communication.
However, he praised Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia for conceding early in the 2024 presidential election, saying, “It saved the country from another chaotic episode caused by EC’s mishandling of results.”
He called for a full overhaul of the commission’s leadership to restore public confidence and safeguard the 2028 elections.
“They are not fit for purpose, and the earlier they go, the better for Ghana’s democracy,” he insisted, warning that continued silence and inaction would only deepen the institutional rot.
