The Minority in Parliament has formally petitioned the Dean of the Diplomatic Corps, Maher Kheir, over what it describes as acts of electoral violence during the Ablekuma North parliamentary rerun held on Friday, July 11.
The petition follows allegations of political intimidation and irregularities in 19 polling stations during the rerun exercise.
In addition to the diplomatic engagement, the Minority also proceeded to the Jubilee House to present a similar petition to President John Dramani Mahama.
The group expressed concern about what they believe is a growing trend of electoral misconduct that threatens the integrity of Ghana’s democratic process.
These actions come on the heels of the Minority’s dramatic walkout from Parliament ahead of the 2025 Mid-Year Budget presentation.
Speaking on the floor, Minority Chief Whip Frank Annoh Dompreh cited the violence in Ablekuma North as the tipping point. “Increasingly, electoral violence is rearing its ugly head in our fledgling democracy,” he stated.
Stressing that the conduct witnessed at the rerun undermines democratic norms, he added, “We cannot be part of the mid-year budget review. And to that extent, we are exiting and cannot be part of this.”
Speaker Alban Bagbin acknowledged the concerns but noted that a future date could be scheduled to deliberate on electoral violence.
