Security Analyst Richard Kumador has urged political parties, the Electoral Commission, and law enforcement agencies to take full responsibility in ensuring a free and fair by-election in Akwatia.
He warned that the lack of adherence to responsibilities by key actors could heighten security risks.
“The politicians who must perform their polling functions and responsibilities misbehave, take the laws into their own hands, we are likely to have the same security breaches,” he cautioned.
Kumador emphasised that the so-called peace pacts signed before elections have no legal backing, which often emboldens misconduct.
He outlined the three critical layers of responsibility in the electoral process—law enforcement, the Electoral Commission, and the political parties—stressing that a clear understanding of these roles was vital to educating the general public.
“If we understood it, then we can educate the general public properly,” he said, urging all stakeholders to take their obligations seriously.
According to him, only firm commitment and discipline across the chain of responsibility can safeguard the integrity of the polls.
His comments come against the backdrop of a high-level meeting earlier today between the Ghana Police Service and political parties ahead of the Akwatia parliamentary by-election.
