Former Vice President and New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer hopeful, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has reaffirmed his commitment to strengthening the welfare of delegates and grassroots members through a structured long-term support system.
Engaging with current and former constituency executives, as well as ex-government officials in the Eastern Region, he emphasized that a robust welfare strategy is critical to sustaining party members whether the NPP is in or out of government.
He recalled that this pledge, first made during his 2023 flagbearership bid, remains central to his leadership vision.
“An army marches on its stomach,” Dr. Bawumia stated, stressing that the neglect of grassroots welfare risks undermining the party’s electoral fortunes.
Citing research that showed many party members abstained from voting in 2024 due to a lack of support, he warned that the problem must be urgently addressed. He further pledged to introduce a broad, sustainable welfare programme that will directly tackle the needs of members across all levels.
According to him, one of the first initiatives will be the establishment of a Welfare Desk at every level of the party to collect and analyse data, ensuring fair and equitable access to resources.
“We will roll out targeted welfare policies that speak directly to the concerns of our people… No more ‘adidigya’ or ‘menyaa hwee’,” he assured, adding that the fair distribution of resources would help strengthen party work and foster inclusion.
Dr. Bawumia is concluding a two-day visit to the Eastern Region ahead of the January 31, 2026, presidential election, with support from 15 out of the 23 NPP Members of Parliament in the region.
