A committee set up by the Ministry of Health to investigate allegations of unethical medical practices at two major public hospitals has recommended disciplinary action against some staff following its findings.
The seven-member committee was tasked with probing reports that patients were being charged unapproved and excessive fees at the Greater Accra Regional Hospital, commonly known as Ridge Hospital, and the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital.
Presenting the committee’s report to the ministry, Chairman Dr. Inua Yusuf, who also serves as Head of Legal Affairs, disclosed that the team uncovered instances of unethical conduct within the facilities.
According to the report, some practices uncovered during the investigation pointed to irregular charges and questionable payment arrangements involving certain service providers.
Among the key recommendations is that Dr. Stephen Marboah—identified as being at the centre of the allegations at Ridge Hospital—should undergo formal disciplinary proceedings.
The committee further proposed that relevant regulatory and institutional bodies investigate issues surrounding payments reportedly made in foreign currency to AXis Pharmacy.
Receiving the report on behalf of the ministry, Deputy Health Minister Dr. Grace Ayensu-Danquah commended the committee for its work and assured that the ministry would carefully review the recommendations and take the necessary steps.
The investigation was initiated following revelations from an investigative report by The Fourth Estate titled “Medical Kalabule,” which exposed alleged corruption and exploitation within parts of Ghana’s healthcare system. The exposé sparked public concern and prompted authorities to launch a formal inquiry into the claims.
