The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has appointed former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to lead its Electoral Observation Mission (EOM) for the upcoming presidential election in Benin.

The mission is expected to be deployed from April 7 to April 15, 2026, as part of ECOWAS’ efforts to support credible, peaceful, and transparent elections within the sub-region. The announcement was made in a statement issued on Friday, March 27, by the ECOWAS Commission.

Benin heads to the polls on April 12 in what is widely viewed as a pivotal election for the country’s democratic future. Incumbent President Patrice Talon, who has been in office since 2016, will not contest the election, in line with constitutional term limits.

His decision to step aside after completing two terms has drawn commendation from political observers, particularly at a time when parts of West Africa continue to grapple with unconstitutional power extensions and military takeovers.

Benin operates a two-round electoral system, requiring a candidate to secure more than 50 percent of valid votes to win in the first round. Failing that, a runoff election is held between the top contenders.

Akufo-Addo’s role as head of the ECOWAS mission will be guided by the 2001 ECOWAS Supplementary Protocol on Democracy and Good Governance, which mandates election observers to assess the transparency of the process, the impartiality of institutions, and the overall electoral environment.

In a social media update, ECOWAS noted that the presence of its observer mission is intended to serve as a “catalyst for promoting democracy, good governance, and regional stability.”
