The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has strongly condemned the remand of its Bono Regional Chairman, Kwame Baffoe Abronye, describing the court’s decision as politically motivated and an attack on democratic freedoms.
In a statement dated May 13, 2026, and signed by the party’s General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong, the party expressed “shock, deep sadness, and serious concern” over the ruling of the Adenta Circuit Court.

The court reportedly remanded Abronye DC into the custody of the National Investigations Bureau until the final determination of his case. The NPP argues that the decision effectively means the party official could remain in custody for an extended period depending on the duration of the legal process.

The party insists that the development goes beyond an individual case and constitutes what it describes as a broader pattern of political intimidation against opposition figures.
Allegations of political Intimidation
The NPP statement further accused the government of orchestrating a wider campaign of harassment against its members, alleging that state institutions were being used to target opposition communicators and officials.
It also suggested that the remand forms part of a deliberate political strategy directed from the highest levels of government.

Concerns over judicial processes
The party also raised concerns about what it described as inconsistencies in the application of bail and remand decisions, arguing that individuals facing different categories of charges are being treated differently depending on political affiliation.
It further called on the judiciary and the Judicial Council to safeguard public confidence in the courts, warning that perceived political influence over judicial decisions could undermine trust in the justice system.
Reference to broader political context
In its statement, the NPP also linked the matter to what it described as an attempt to divert national attention from other controversies involving government officials, including reference to the reported arrest of a Member of Parliament abroad.
Party position
Despite its criticisms, the NPP called on its supporters to remain calm and united, insisting it would pursue legal and political means to secure the release and clearance of its regional chairman.
