The Minister for Works, Housing and Water Resources, Hon. Kenneth Gilbert Adjei, has attributed the persistent flooding at the Ofankor Barrier to structures built on major drainage channels.
Responding to questions in Parliament, the Minister said the Ministry is “fully aware of the recurring flooding challenges within the Trobu Constituency and its surrounding areas, particularly during periods of heavy rainfall.”
Hon. Adjei noted that the floods continue to threaten lives, property, livelihoods and critical infrastructure, including the Achimota–Ofankor Highway.
“Mr. Speaker, the persistent flooding at the Ofankor Barrier is primarily due to structures constructed directly on major water drains, obstructing the natural flow of water,” he told the House.
According to the Minister, the Ghana Hydrological Authority, through the Greater Accra Drainage Planning Studies, has conducted a technical assessment and identified targeted interventions aimed at improving drainage capacity and reducing the impact of flooding in the area.
He said that under the 2023 National Flood Control Programme, the Hydrological Authority carried out construction works on about 150 metres of the downstream section of the Spot M drainage channel to improve water flow conditions.
However, Hon. Adjei indicated that the total stretch requiring rehabilitation exceeds 2.1 kilometres.
“The remaining section still requires comprehensive upgrading, including widening, lining and capacity enhancement,” he stated.
The Minister assured Parliament that the Ministry remains committed to completing the outstanding works once the necessary financial approvals and funding are secured from the Ministry of Finance.
He added that completing the project would significantly improve drainage within the Trobu catchment area and help reduce the frequency and severity of flooding at the Ofankor Barrier.
