NPP Declares August 6 Protest Over Sedina Tamakloe’s Acquittal

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has announced plans to stage a nationwide demonstration on August 6, 2026, following the Court of Appeal’s decision to acquit and discharge former Chief Executive Officer of the Microfinance and Small Loans Centre (MASLOC), Sedina Tamakloe-Attionu.

The party says the protest is aimed at drawing attention to what it describes as threats to Ghana’s democracy, accountability systems and the rule of law.

Addressing journalists, the NPP’s National Organiser, Henry Nana Boakye, popularly known as Nana B, said the demonstration will be held in partnership with other political parties, civil society organisations, professional bodies, youth groups, student movements and concerned citizens.

He explained that the protest will begin in Accra before extending to other parts of the country.

“The time for silence is over. The NPP serves notice that on 6th August, 2026, in collaboration with other political parties, CSOs, professional bodies, youth movements, student movements and all well-meaning citizens, we shall embark on a massive demonstration to defend our democracy,” Nana B said.

The planned action follows the Court of Appeal’s ruling that overturned Sedina Tamakloe-Attionu’s conviction by the High Court, where she had been sentenced to 10 years in prison after being found guilty on multiple charges related to her tenure at MASLOC.

The NPP has questioned the conduct of the Attorney General’s office during the appeal process, accusing the state of failing to present a strong case before the court.

According to the party, the outcome of the case raises concerns about Ghana’s fight against corruption and the protection of democratic institutions.

Sedina Tamakloe-Attionu was convicted in April 2024 after a trial that began on January 30, 2019. She was found guilty on several charges, including stealing and conspiracy to steal, wilfully causing financial loss to the state, causing loss to public property, improper payment of public funds, unauthorised commitment and money laundering.

She had faced 78 counts brought against her over alleged financial irregularities during her time as MASLOC Chief Executive.

The prosecution, led by then Attorney-General Godfred Yeboah Dame and supported by investigations from the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), accused her of misappropriating public funds through various MASLOC programmes.

One of the allegations involved the alleged diversion of a GH¢500,000 loan facility intended for Obaatanpa Microfinance after the institution rejected the facility due to concerns over its interest rate.

The NPP maintains that its August 6 demonstration is to defend democratic accountability, constitutional principles and institutional independence.
