At least 11 people have been confirmed dead and 13 others injured following a multiple-vehicle crash at the Ofankor Barrier on the N6 Highway in Accra early Thursday morning.
The accident occurred at about 4 a.m. on the express lane of the N6 from the Pokuase side towards Achimota.
Four vehicles — two tipper trucks, a minibus and a tricycle, popularly known as an aboboyaa — were involved in the collision.
The impact severely damaged the minibus, leaving some passengers trapped inside the wreckage and requiring emergency personnel to undertake rescue operations.
Personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) and the police were deployed to the scene to rescue the injured, retrieve victims and manage the situation.
According to ADO1 Alex King Nartey of the GNFS, the rescue team worked to extricate victims from the mangled minibus and transport those who sustained serious injuries to various medical facilities for treatment.
A female victim whose legs were reportedly severed in the collision was among those evacuated from the scene by ambulance.
The crash caused significant traffic congestion on the highway during the morning rush hour.
The police subsequently redirected vehicles onto the outer service lane to ease the congestion and allow emergency crews to continue their operations at the crash site.
The circumstances leading to the collision are yet to be fully established, while further details on the victims and the extent of the injuries are expected from the authorities.
