The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has confirmed receiving three separate petitions concerning extortion allegations levelled against Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, by Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod), Sammy Gyamfi.
The anti-corruption agency disclosed on Monday, August 24, that one of the petitions was jointly submitted by two individuals, while two others were filed separately by different petitioners.
According to the OSP, it will first assess the petitions and the allegations contained in them to determine whether the matter falls within its statutory mandate.
The office will subsequently decide whether the circumstances warrant further investigative action.
The development follows a public dispute between Mr Gyamfi and Mr Afenyo-Markin, after the GoldBod Chief Executive accused the Minority Leader of extortion.
Mr Afenyo-Markin has denied the allegations and indicated that he intends to pursue legal action against Mr Gyamfi.
The dispute has also centred on claims concerning alleged losses of GH¢22 billion, equivalent to approximately US$1.7 billion, associated with the Domestic Gold Purchase Programme in 2025.
Meanwhile, the United Party has separately petitioned the Attorney-General and other anti-corruption and security agencies to investigate the extortion allegations against Mr Afenyo-Markin.
The party’s Communications Director, Solomon Owusu, and Legal Director, Andrew Appiah-Danquah, filed the petition.
The OSP’s assessment will determine whether the petitions fall within its jurisdiction and whether the allegations provide sufficient grounds for further action.
