Sixty-five victims of the June 21 fire at the Albert Bosomtwe-Sam Fishing Harbour in Sekondi have received relief items following the intervention of the Member of Parliament for Essikado-Ketan and Deputy Minister for Health, Prof. Dr. Grace Ayensu-Danquah.
The items, distributed by the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Directorate of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), are intended to ease the hardship of the affected fisherfolk and traders.
The relief package comprises 200 bags of rice, 100 bags of maize, 200 mattresses, 200 buckets, 100 basins, 10 boxes of detergents, 50 gallons of liquid soap, 200 plates and 200 cups.

According to the Metropolitan Director of NADMO, Alhaji Abubakar Kamal Deen, Dr. Ayensu-Danquah visited the disaster scene with NADMO officials shortly after the fire to assess the damage, engage with the affected persons and offer them comfort.
He said the MP also pledged to help secure urgent support for the victims and subsequently facilitated the release of the relief items.
The distribution formed part of activities to mark the 2026 International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction, observed under the theme “Resilience Starts at Home.”
The occasion also provided a platform for officials to call for collective action to prevent fires, floods and other disasters.
The Metropolitan Chief Executive, Frederick Faidoo, and Western Regional Minister Joseph Nelson were among the officials who emphasised the need for greater public awareness and shared responsibility in disaster prevention.
They noted that the Western Region recorded 207 disaster incidents affecting 4,347 people in 2025, underscoring the need to strengthen preventive measures and community preparedness.
