Kenyan journalist Rukia Bulle has been named the winner of the 2024 BBC News Komla Dumor Award.
At 26, Bulle becomes the ninth recipient of the prestigious award, which was established to honor the late Ghanaian journalist Komla Dumor.
Bulle, who works for Kenya’s Nation Media Group, has gained recognition for her human interest stories and a strong presence on TikTok, where she shares insights into the life of a journalist.
The judges praised Bulle for her resilience in handling challenging stories, her commitment to highlighting under-represented voices, and her strong on-air presence.
“Winning this award means a great deal to me. As a journalist, you constantly strive to do your best, regardless of recognition, so to be acknowledged on a global stage through the Komla Dumor Award is incredibly validating,” Bulle said.
She hopes her achievement will inspire young girls, particularly those from minority communities, to dream big and pursue their goals.
As part of her award, Bulle will spend three months working with BBC News teams across television, radio, and online in London.
She will receive training and mentorship from leading BBC journalists and will travel to an African country to report on a story for the BBC’s global audience.
Tarik Kafala, acting director of the BBC World Service, expressed his delight in welcoming Bulle as this year’s winner, noting the significant contributions past recipients have made to public service journalism.
