The National Executive Committee (NEC) of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) has directed its members to suspend their strike action by Tuesday, October 29, 2024.
This directive follows weeks of industrial action that significantly disrupted academic activities in public universities nationwide, leaving many students in limbo.
Since the strike began on October 10, 2024, UTAG has been vocal about the urgent need for government intervention against illegal mining, widely referred to as galamsey.
In their fight against galamsey, UTAG has highlighted the environmental devastation wreaked by illegal mining operations, particularly the destruction of vital water bodies.
The association emphasized that this environmental crisis jeopardizes the future of national sustainability.
With ongoing negotiations yielding some progress, the NEC’s decision reflects a cautious optimism that the government is beginning to recognize the urgency of addressing their concerns, particularly regarding environmental protection and academic stability.
As the strike officially concludes on October 29, students are poised to return to their classrooms by November 1, 2024.
While the NEC encourages UTAG members to resume their teaching duties, they stressed that they will remain vigilant, committed to monitoring the government’s actions to ensure that promises made are fulfilled.
