As Ghana’s general elections approach, security expert Adib Saani has raised concerns over the government’s failure to enforce laws against election violence.
He argues that the current approach to addressing election-related crimes remains superficial.
“It should go just beyond the talk. We need to ensure that the laws are enforced to the latter,” Saani emphasized, recalling instances where individuals involved in previous election violence have gone unpunished.
He warned that without practical enforcement, the country risks a surge in unrest.
Saani also highlighted the increasing trend of Ghanaians acquiring weapons illegally due to waning trust in the state’s ability to protect them. He stressed that this could further escalate tensions.
“More people are beginning to lose confidence in the state’s ability to protect them or ensure safety. As a result, they are willing to use hook or crook means to obtain weapons,” he said, stressing that such actions could fuel violence during the December 7 elections.
The security expert urged for stronger collaboration between the police, military, and other security agencies to enhance intelligence and keep the peace as the general election looms.
