Former Works and Housing Minister Kojo Oppong Nkrumah has emphasized the urgent need for a well-funded, credible plan to address Accra’s persistent flooding challenges.
Speaking on ABC News GH on Tuesday, May 20, he stated, “My hope will only be hanging on a credible plan which is funded. We need to put a clear credible plan, if not nothing will change.”
He further highlighted that the funding must come from a combination of government resources and contributions from citizens to be effective.
Nkrumah also pointed to flooding as a collective failure of both government authorities and residents.
“It’s a collective failure, there must be a collective…” effort to tackle Accra’s perennial flooding canker.
He urged the government to improve waste management and infrastructure development, warning that without proper management, “it’s going to be frustrated.”
Commenting on President John Dramani Mahama’s plan to build a new city aimed at easing Accra’s congestion, Nkrumah called the idea “fantastic in the air” but “hypothetical,” stressing that the main issue remains funding.
“It’s not a bad idea, but question is what is the cost and how to fund it,” he said, underscoring the critical need for financial planning in executing such ambitious projects.
