ABC News GH journalist Godwin Opoku Okyere was violently attacked at the Light of Gospel polling station during the Ablekuma North rerun elections.
According to reports from the ABC News newsroom, the reporter’s camera was seized by unidentified individuals believed to be part of a rogue task force operating at the centre.
The attackers deleted all visual content recorded at the polling station before returning the equipment.
This marks the third reported assault on journalists in a single day in the constituency.
Alongside the ABC News incident, a GH One TV journalist was slapped by a police officer, and a Joy News reporter was also attacked under similar circumstances.
These coordinated acts of aggression have raised alarm about the growing hostility towards journalists in Ghana’s democratic space and the shrinking safety net for media professionals.
Tensions have intensified across several polling centres in Ablekuma North, with multiple reports of harassment and obstruction by unidentified operatives.
“Some officers have countered barricade arrangements and are changing security processes,” one ABC News reporter noted from the ground.
Calls are mounting for the security services to not only boost personnel deployment but also take decisive action against individuals violating the rights of media practitioners during this crucial electoral process.
