North Tongu Member of Parliament (MP), Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has announced the establishment of a GH¢100,000 emergency rent fund to assist victims of the Akosombo dam spillage in securing temporary housing.
The spillage, which occurred in October 2023, has severely affected over 12,000 residents, many of whom remain displaced and in dire need of assistance.
Ablakwa, addressing the media after filing his nomination for re-election, emphasized the urgent need for intervention.
The MP expressed deep concern over the ongoing crisis, stating that 1,360 of his constituents are still living in tents.
“That is unacceptable. That is inhumane,” he remarked, stressing that his primary focus for the next term would be ensuring the “total resettlement and compensation” of all victims of the spillage from both the Akosombo and Kpong Dams.
Ablakwa has long been vocal about the need for comprehensive support for the affected communities.
The newly established fund will prioritize the most vulnerable, particularly women and nursing mothers, who continue to endure harsh living conditions.
“I am putting aside GH¢100,000 as emergency rent support for our brothers and sisters who are still in the tents,” he said.
