Nana Akua Afriyie, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary candidate for Ablekuma North, has announce she will contest tomorrow’s parliamentary rerun, defying the party’s earlier decision to boycott the process.
Her declaration follows the Accra High Court’s dismissal of her injunction application on July 9, 2025, which had sought to stop the Electoral Commission (EC)-mandated rerun.
“I won the election and I am contesting tomorrow’s rerun to show the whole world for it,” she stated.
The rerun, affecting 19 polling stations, was ordered by the EC to address controversies surrounding the December 2024 general election results in the constituency.
The NPP had initially rejected the rerun, insisting that Afriyie was the rightful winner and accusing the EC of attempting to undermine the will of the people.
The legal setback on Wednesday, however, has not deterred Afriyie, who insists on defending her mandate through the ballot.
The NPP has now begun campaigning ahead of the July 11 rerun, despite its earlier resistance.
At a press conference on July 8, NPP General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong reaffirmed the party’s position that Afriyie won the original vote by a margin of 414 votes.
He emphasized the party’s resolve to protect its electoral gains, stating, “We are not going to be intimidated.”
The decision to rejoin the electoral process appears to be a strategic pivot to regain control of the constituency amid growing internal and external pressure.
On the ground in Ablekuma North, campaign activity has surged, with NPP supporters rallying in support of Afriyie.
Her image remains on the ballot, a factor that has further energized the base.
