The organization is calling on President Akufo-Addo, Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin, and Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo to come together immediately to address the dispute between parliamentary caucuses over who holds the majority.
Despite a Supreme Court ruling that stayed the execution of a decision to declare four seats vacant, tensions remain high as the minority caucus continues to claim majority status.
Dr. Rasheed Draman, ACEPA’s Executive Director, expressed his deep concern about the potential dangers of the deadlock.
In an interview with Citi News, Draman emphasized the gravity of the situation, stating, “It is a very serious matter for our democracy… the three branches of government, our president, our speaker, and our Chief Justice, would have to have a conversation.”
He warned that without swift resolution, the country could face chaos and a breakdown of law and order.
Dr. Draman painted a grim picture of the consequences if the impasse is not addressed.
“Can you imagine, for one moment, the military getting in and saying that we have to resolve our differences… What it could do? It could lead to the usurpation of civilian power and all the consequences that could follow,” he cautioned, stressing the urgency for leadership to intervene before the situation spirals further.
