The Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, has announced a major initiative to clear unauthorized structures and improve emergency access routes in the Adum PZ area following the devastating fire at Adum Blue Light on March 21.
The fire, which gutted several shops and caused significant losses, exposed major challenges in firefighting efforts due to blocked access routes.
In a statement on March 23, the Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council (ARCC) emphasized that ensuring free movement for emergency responders is critical in preventing future disasters.
The initiative, set to begin on March 24, will involve security personnel to enforce the measures, with a call for public cooperation.
This move aligns with growing concerns from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), which has repeatedly called for the demolition of illegal structures that hinder emergency operations.
“This initiative aims to enhance accessibility and minimize the risk of fire incident caused by human activity.”
“To ensure the a smooth implementation, security personnel will be deployed.”
“The activity is scheduled to commence on Monday, March 24, 2025” the statement read.
GNFS spokesperson DO III Desmond Ackah, speaking on ABC News GH, stressed the urgency of addressing encroachment, stating, “We need to take the bull by the horn. Where structures are not supposed to be, we need to demolish them.”
The fire at Adum Market is just one of many recent incidents highlighting the dangers of obstructed access routes.
Meanwhile, former President John Dramani Mahama has visited affected traders, pledging government support and urging market users to adhere to safety regulations to prevent further tragedies.
