Ghana head coach Otto Addo has acknowledged his team’s shortcomings after the Black Stars failed to qualify for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) for the first time in 21 years.
A 1-1 draw against Angola on matchday five of the qualifiers marked the end of Ghana’s run of consecutive AFCON appearances since 2006.
Addo congratulated Angola on their achievement, stating in the post-match press conference, “Congratulations to Angola for qualifying for the AFCON. They didn’t have to lose today.
You could see they played freely; we were more under pressure, and they pressed us very well and held us down in our half.”
The Black Stars’ qualification campaign was marred by underwhelming results, including three draws and two defeats in a group that featured Angola, Sudan, and Niger.
Reflecting on the team’s overall performance, Addo highlighted a lack of intensity and focus as significant factors contributing to their failure.
“We were missing our intensity, and I think it was not good enough from our side,” he admitted.
He also pointed out that failing to secure victories at home played a critical role, noting, “In these tournaments, you have to win your home games; very, very important.”
The disappointment has prompted calls from fans for a thorough review of the team’s direction and performance.
With only one final qualifying match left against Niger in Accra, the game will be a mere formality for Ghana.
Addo’s focus has now shifted to evaluating and addressing the weaknesses that led to this historic setback as the team seeks to rebuild for future competitions.
