The Volta River Authority (VRA) has announced plans for a controlled water spillage from the Akosombo Dam in the coming weeks, assuring the public of minimal expected damage.
According to Ben Sackey, the Director of Environment and Sustainable Development at VRA, the Authority has initiated extensive stakeholder engagement to address concerns and improve outcomes.
“Every year, we come and have an education on the latest spill, the district assembly can bear witness to that, since 2011,” Sackey noted, emphasizing the increased involvement of various stakeholders due to lessons learned from previous incidents.
The last spillage, which commenced on September 15, 2023, led to the displacement of around 39,000 residents and the destruction of numerous farmlands.
To safeguard the integrity of the dam, the spillage was intensified for three weeks, causing grave flooding across eight districts in three regions: Asuogyaman, Shai Osudoku, North Tongu, Central Tongu, South Tongu, Anlo, Keta Municipal, Ketu South Municipal, and Ada East.
