Akua Donkor, leader of the Ghana Freedom Party (GFP), has threatened legal action against National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer John Dramani Mahama over his recent remarks regarding the inclusion of “unserious” parties on the ballot.
Donkor, outraged by Mahama’s comments, asserted her right to be a candidate, despite her limited academic background.
“I am a citizen and have fulfilled all lawful requirements. I deserve to be on the ballot paper,” she declared during an IPAC meeting on Tuesday, October 15, 2024.
Mahama’s controversial statement, made during a durbar in Nabullo, Sissala East, suggested that some of the candidates approved by the Electoral Commission (EC) did not measure up to the caliber of Bernard Mornah, who was disqualified along with 10 others on September 20.
According to Mahama, the EC’s decision was questionable and unjust, leading him to argue that Mornah should have been given a place on the ballot, unlike certain other candidates.
Donkor’s response highlights the emotional toll of Mahama’s accusations, as she seeks to protect her political legitimacy.
While Mahama maintains that the EC’s actions were discriminatory, Donkor insists she has every right to compete.
