Former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has firmly denied allegations suggesting he attempted to interfere with the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) decision to hold early primaries or sought a postponement of the upcoming National Delegates Conference scheduled for Saturday, July 19.
The denial comes amid media reports alleging the former President made moves to overturn the party’s position on internal timelines.
In a statement released on Monday, July 14, the Office of the Former President described the claims as “completely false.”
It clarified that, “President Akufo-Addo, who has been out of the jurisdiction for some time now, has not made any such requests to the party—either through a petition or by any other means—and has no intention of doing so.”
The statement further accused the sources behind the reports of pursuing an agenda unrelated to the welfare of the NPP: “Clearly, those behind these publications have an agenda of their own, which has nothing to do with improving the fortunes of the New Patriotic Party.”
Meanwhile, the NPP leadership has confirmed that the upcoming National Delegates Conference will proceed as planned on July 19.
Among key items on the agenda are constitutional reforms, including deliberations on recommendations from the Prof. Mike Oquaye Committee and a pending proposal from the 2019 Delegates Conference held in Kumasi, which had received initial approval but had not yet been formally considered.
