President Akufo-Addo has left Ghana for Samoa, where he will join 56 Heads of State for the 27th Commonwealth meeting, scheduled from October 21 to 26.
The President’s mission is to rally support for Ghana’s Foreign Minister, Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey, who is vying for the coveted position of Secretary-General of the Commonwealth. Ayorkor Botchwey faces competition from candidates from The Gambia and Lesotho.
Information Minister Fatimatu Abubakar expressed confidence in Ayorkor Botchwey’s chances, highlighting her extensive diplomatic experience. “She has distinguished herself on various international committees, and we are confident that she will bring this home,” Madam Abubakar said.
She emphasized Ayorkor Botchwey’s vision for climate resilience, economic transformation, and youth empowerment through technology.
Madam Abubakar added that Ayorkor Botchwey’s leadership could inspire Ghanaian women. “She’s been a strong advocate for developing nations, and if elected, she will promote trade and investments across Africa,” she noted.
As the Commonwealth prepares to elect its next leader, the stakes are high for Ghana and for women across the continent.
