President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has established a five-member ministerial committee to address the escalating galamsey crisis.
The committee, led by National Security Minister Hon. Albert Kan-Dapaah, will work to evaluate and enhance the government’s strategies to combat illegal mining, which has severely impacted Ghana’s environment and public health.
The committee comprises key ministers including Hon. Samuel A. Jinapor (Lands and Natural Resources), Hon. Dominic Nitiwul (Defense), Hon. Ignatius Baffour Awuah (Employment, Labour Relations and Pensions), and Hon. Fatimatu Abubakar (Information).
This formation comes in the wake of urgent appeals from the Trade Union Congress (TUC) of Ghana and other stakeholders who have highlighted the destructive effects of illegal mining on forests, water bodies, and agricultural lands.
This new initiative echoes President Akufo-Addo’s 2017 pledge to eradicate galamsey, emphasizing a national effort to restore and protect Ghana’s natural resources.
The President’s commitment, which includes rallying traditional leaders to assist combat the menace in their respective communities.
