Former President of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has been appointed by the African Union (AU) to lead its Elections Observation Mission to the Republic of the Congo ahead of the country’s upcoming presidential election.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Office of the former president announced that the AU had selected Akufo-Addo to head the continental body’s observation team for the polls scheduled for 15 March 2026 in the Central African nation.
The AU Election Observation Mission (AUEOM) will include members drawn from the AU Permanent Representatives Committee, the Pan-African Parliament, the African Governance Platform, election management bodies, independent election experts, civil society organisations, as well as representatives of women’s and youth groups.
The mission is expected to monitor the electoral process and assess the conduct of the elections in line with the AU’s democratic governance and electoral standards.
Akufo-Addo is expected to depart Accra on Friday, 13 March 2026, and return to Ghana on 18 March 2026 after completing the assignment.
The appointment places the former Ghanaian leader at the forefront of the AU’s efforts to promote credible elections, democratic governance, and political stability across the African continent.
