Political analyst Dr. Samuel Afriyie has said the appointment of Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie as substantive Chief Justice presents both an opportunity for reform and a career risk due to the circumstance in which he was appointed.
Speaking to ABC News GH on Tuesday, he noted that while Justice Baffoe-Bonnie possesses the expertise and is deserving of the position, the political climate in which he assumes office may affect perceptions of his independence.
According to Dr. Afriyie, the new Chief Justice has a crucial responsibility to restore public confidence in the judiciary, which he said has been shaken in recent times.
He stressed that building trust in the justice system is vital, particularly at a time when many Ghanaians are beginning to lose faith in its fairness and impartiality.
President John Mahama nominated Justice Baffoe-Bonnie after the suspension and removal of former Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo earlier this year.
The Council of State is reviewing the nomination, which, if approved by Parliament, will formally confirm Baffoe-Bonnie as head of the judiciary at a critical moment in Ghana’s democratic journey.
