Ghana legend Asamoah Gyan has described the Black Stars’ 2026 FIFA World Cup group as “very tricky” after the four-time African champions were drawn in Group L alongside England, Croatia and Panama.
The draw, held on Friday in Washington DC, pits Ghana against two European powerhouses and a rapidly improving CONCACAF side, a combination Gyan believes will demand Ghana’s best efforts.
“It’s a very tricky group. All the four teams want to qualify,” Gyan said after the draw. “Definitely, we are optimistic back home; we want Ghana to qualify. We’ll do our possible best to qualify” he said.
The former Black Stars captain is no stranger to World Cup pressure. Gyan remains Ghana’s all-time leading scorer at the tournament with six goals, and also holds the record as Africa’s top scorer in World Cup history. His goalscoring exploits across the 2006, 2010 and 2014 editions cemented his place as one of the continent’s greatest ever forwards.
Gyan also has a personal connection to one of Ghana’s group opponents. He scored the equalizer in Ghana’s only meeting with England, a 1-1 draw in an international friendly at Wembley in 2011.
With the expanded 48-team World Cup format offering more qualification spots from each group, Gyan remains hopeful that Ghana can rise to the challenge.
The Black Stars will now begin preparations for what promises to be a fiercely contested Group L campaign in 2026.
