The Minority Leader in Parliament, Cassiel Ato Forson has published a list of new taxes that are set to be introduced by the government in the near future. The list includes a range of taxes that will impact individuals and businesses, raising concerns about the potential financial burden on taxpayers.
In a post shared on X on Sunday, December 3, 2023, the Member of Parliament for Ajumako-Enyan-Essiam published excerpts of a number of tax bills proposed by government for parliamentary approval.
Expressing his discontentment, the legislator described the move by the goverment as insensitive and a poor attempt to cover up for the gross mismanagement of the economy.
“This government indeed has an insatiable appetite for taxes. The Akufo-Addo/Bawumia government is seeking to impose a 20% tax on akpeteshie. They have run out of ideas”.
Among the taxes listed by the minority leader, government is seeking to introduce an annual vehicular tax of GHS 100 on all petrol and diesel cars and a tax on carbon emissions.
“This tax will be imposed on all trotros, aboboyaas, okadas, taxis, commercial buses, trucks, ambulances, construction and heavy duty vehicles, water tankers, private cars, etc. Once your vehicle is powered by petrol or diesel, the government is imposing this tax on you,” he cited.
He added: “Companies will also pay GHS 100 per ton of carbon dioxide emission. According to the government, this policy is aimed at promoting the use of cleaner/more eco-friendly sources of energy (like electric vehicles).
