President John Dramani Mahama has said the leadership values of the late President John Evans Atta Mills continue to influence his approach to governance, stressing that his administration will remain committed to serving Ghanaians and safeguarding the country’s democratic institutions.
Speaking during a wreath-laying ceremony at Asomdwee Park in Accra to commemorate the 14th anniversary of the passing of the former President, Mr Mahama reflected on the lessons he learned while serving as Vice President under Professor Mills.
According to him, the late President’s qualities of integrity, humility, unity and dedication to public service remain a source of inspiration as he carries out the responsibilities entrusted to him by Ghanaians.
“As I reflect on the responsibilities that the people of Ghana have entrusted on me today, I often recall his quiet wisdom and steady temperament. These values continue to remind me that every decision that I take must ultimately serve the people of Ghana and strengthen the democratic institutions that would outlive us all,” he said.
President Mahama noted that the most meaningful way to preserve the memory of Professor Mills is by living out the principles that defined his public service rather than limiting remembrance to annual ceremonies.
He identified integrity in public office, respect for democratic institutions, tolerance of differing opinions, compassion for vulnerable citizens and inclusive national development as the ideals that characterised the late President’s administration.
The President further observed that Professor Mills’ aspiration for a peaceful, just and prosperous Ghana remains a collective national responsibility, assuring Ghanaians that his government would continue to pursue those ideals.
“His dream of a peaceful, just and prosperous Ghana remains a work in progress. And I pledge to the memory of Professor Mills, that I shall continue to walk in the footsteps that he left,” he added.
The ceremony formed part of activities marking 14 years since the passing of the late President John Evans Atta Mills, who died in office on July 24, 2012.
