The Electoral Commission (EC) has announced Tuesday, March 3, 2026, as the date for a parliamentary by-election in the Ayawaso East Constituency, setting in motion a tightly scheduled process to fill the vacant seat following the death of the area’s Member of Parliament, Hon. Mahama Naser Toure.

In a statement issued on January 16, 2026, and signed by the EC’s Deputy Chairman for Operations, Samuel Tettey, the Commission outlined key timelines and requirements for aspiring candidates, underscoring its commitment to an orderly, transparent, and inclusive electoral exercise.

According to the EC, nominations will be received at the Ayawaso East Municipal Office of the Commission at North Ridge from Monday, February 9, to Wednesday, February 11, 2026. Submissions will be accepted daily between 9:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m., and from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Prospective candidates may download nomination forms from the EC’s official website starting Friday, January 16, 2026. Completed forms must be submitted in quadruplicate and presented in person by the candidate, or by their proposer or seconder, within the nomination period.

To qualify, each candidate must have their nomination forms endorsed by a proposer and a seconder, both of whom must be registered voters in the Ayawaso East Constituency. In addition, the nomination must be supported by at least eighteen other registered voters from the constituency.

The Commission also requires candidates to submit two recent bust-sized photographs with a red background, along with a non-refundable filing fee. The fee has been set at GH¢10,000 for general candidates, while female candidates and persons with disabilities (PWDs) will benefit from a reduced fee of GH¢7,500—a measure the EC says is aimed at promoting broader participation in the electoral process.

The by-election is being held in line with Article 112 (5) of the 1992 Constitution, as amended, which mandates the EC to conduct an election whenever a parliamentary seat becomes vacant.

As preparations intensify, the EC has called on political parties, candidates, and the general public to be guided by the outlined procedures and timelines, assuring Ghanaians of its readiness to deliver a free, fair, and credible poll in Ayawaso East.
