The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, is expected to deliver a ruling today on a petition seeking the removal of four sitting Members of Parliament (MPs).
The petition, spearheaded by the Minority, is targeting the MP for Agona West, Cynthia Morrison, MP for Suhum, Kojo Asante, Fomena MP, Andrew Asiamah, and Amenfi Central MP, Peter Kwakye Ackah.
These MPs are facing removal for filing to contest as independent candidates in the upcoming December parliamentary elections.
One of the MPs under scrutiny, Peter Kwakye Ackah, expressed his lack of concern over the potential outcome of the Speaker’s ruling.
He argued that his decision to run as an independent candidate in the next parliamentary session does not necessarily mean he is abandoning his party.
“I have not declared that I have left the party,” Ackah stated. “I am only declaring my intention that in the next parliament, I would want to be an independent candidate.”
Ackah emphasized that other members from political parties, including the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC), could also make similar decisions without formally leaving their parties.
Ackah further acknowledged the consequences of his actions, stating that any decision from the Speaker could be beyond challenge.
“If you take any action, there should be a reaction. So you must be ready for it,” he remarked.
He recognized the possibility that the Speaker could declare his seat vacant but remained unfazed, acknowledging that any ruling against him would be binding.
“If you take any action, there should be a reaction. So you must be ready for it. Because if you say you are going independent and the Speaker rules that your seat is vacant, what can you do? You cannot challenge them because they have been imprisoned already.”
