Residents of Awutu Bawjiase in the Central Region are set to benefit from a modern 24-hour market complex as part of government efforts to boost local economic activity and create jobs.
The Deputy Minister of Works and Housing and Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya West, Gizella Agbotui Tetteh, disclosed this during an engagement with market women, traditional leaders, and residents ahead of the commencement of the project.
According to her, the initiative forms part of a broader government strategy to improve market infrastructure while expanding economic opportunities, particularly for women in the area.
The announcement has been met with optimism among residents, traders, and traditional authorities, who view the project as a long-awaited intervention to transform the Bawjiase market. The existing market, which has served the community for nearly a century, is in dire need of modernization.
Hon. Tetteh noted that the redevelopment of the market has become necessary after 99 years of its existence, stressing that the new facility will provide a conducive environment for trading and enhance commercial activities in the area.
She further explained that the project fulfills a campaign promise made by President John Dramani Mahama ahead of the 2024 general elections.
Addressing the media, the MP emphasized that the construction of the 24-hour market complex will not only modernize trading infrastructure but also generate employment opportunities for unemployed women and youth in Awutu Bawjiase and its surrounding communities.
She expressed confidence that the project would contribute significantly to poverty reduction while improving livelihoods in the constituency.
The planned market complex is expected to include modern facilities that will support round-the-clock trading, positioning Awutu Bawjiase as a key commercial hub within the Central Region.
