The Upper East Regional Minister, Donatus Akamugri Atanga, has ordered the immediate closure of Zuarungu Senior High School following a violent clash between Kusasi and Frafra students on Sunday, July 20.
The disturbance reportedly started over the alleged theft of a mobile phone but quickly escalated into a chaotic brawl that led to the burning of some structures on campus and a surge in ethnic tension within the school.

Four students were arrested by the police in connection with the incident.
However, in a dramatic twist, one of the suspects escaped during transport to the station and allegedly seized a police officer’s magazine in the process, raising serious security concerns.
The school, already on edge from the broader Bawku conflict, was immediately shut down to prevent further violence.

Security forces, including police and military personnel, have since moved in to de-escalate the situation and have escorted students from Bawku back to their hometown under tight protection.
Authorities say investigations are ongoing, and all efforts are being made to restore calm to the school and surrounding communities.
