Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has officially launched GoRide, a ride-hailing app designed to support local taxi drivers and advance the nation’s transportation infrastructure.
The launch event, held on October 30, 2024, marked a milestone for Ghana’s economy as it moves toward fostering innovation and empowering its citizens through digital solutions.
Dr. Bawumia emphasized the transformative impact GoRide will have, noting, “This initiative goes beyond just convenience; it represents empowerment, innovation, and a future built on local pride and solutions.”
GoRide is the result of a strategic public-private partnership aimed at modernizing Ghana’s transportation system while empowering drivers associated with the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU).
The app’s competitive commission rate of just 10% ensures that drivers retain a greater share of their earnings, thereby improving their financial stability and allowing them to support their families.
“By offering a commission structure that benefits our drivers, GoRide is enabling a fairer, more sustainable model that honors our hardworking citizens,” said Dr. Bawumia.
Integrated with Tap’ n Go, a secure local payment platform, GoRide enhances customer convenience and boosts Ghana’s fintech ecosystem.
This partnership reinforces the government’s dedication to homegrown solutions, creating a seamless experience for riders and helping drivers transition to a digital economy.
Dr. Bawumia pointed out that GoRide’s system would also promote financial inclusion, enabling drivers to access the formal banking sector and essential services such as loans and insurance.
He announced that 1% of drivers’ earnings will go toward pensions, providing long-term financial security for the workforce.
The Vice President highlighted that GoRide’s impact will extend beyond transportation, creating jobs in vehicle maintenance, banking, insurance, and customer support.
He noted that by keeping profits within Ghana’s borders, the app conserves foreign exchange, builds local wealth, and strengthens the national economy.
GoRide is not just another ride-hailing service; it’s a digital version of our traditional taxi system tailored to the needs of Ghanaians.
